4 Simple Ways to Track Healthy Puppy Development

Raising a puppy is exciting—but also comes with lots of questions! Especially in the early weeks, puppies are delicate and need extra care to ensure they’re developing properly.

Whether you’re a new pet parent or just want to double-check that your pup is thriving, here are 4 helpful tips to monitor your puppy’s healthy growth:

1. Stable weight increase

One of the most reliable signs of good puppy health is consistent weight gain. A healthy newborn should gain around 5–10% of their birth weight daily in the first few weeks. If your puppy’s weight plateaus or drops, it could be a signal that they’re not getting enough nutrition.

➤ Try offering smaller, more frequent meals to support their digestion, and monitor their appetite closely.

Also, don’t forget to check your puppy’s poop—loose or irregular stools can be a sign of dietary intolerance or tummy trouble. You might need to switch to a more gentle, puppy-appropriate formula.

2. Too Much Whimpering? It Might Be a Sign

Newborn puppies mostly eat and sleep—and rarely cry. If your pup is frequently whimpering or seems restless, they might be feeling uncomfortable, hungry, or even unwell.

Common causes include:

  • Feeling too cold or too warm
  • Not getting enough milk
  • Early signs of illness

If the whimpering continues despite a comfortable environment and proper feeding, it’s best to get your vet’s advice.

3. Check Their Spine and Head Gently

Physical development is just as important as nutrition. As your puppy grows, gently check their spine and head for any unusual bumps or asymmetry.

Sometimes, birth defects or developmental issues can go unnoticed in the early days. Lightly running your fingers along their back and head can help you spot anything that seems off.

If you notice anything unusual, consult your vet for early assessment.

4. Is Water Coming Out of Their Nose?

Here’s something not everyone thinks to check: when your puppy drinks, does water come out of their nose?

This could be a sign of a cleft palate—a congenital condition that may require veterinary care. If you notice this happening, especially in very young puppies, have them checked as soon as possible.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Don’t Skip Vet Visits!

While at-home monitoring is important, regular vet checkups are the best way to ensure your puppy is growing just right. If something feels off—even a small behavior change—trust your instincts and seek professional advice.
